Forest Of Galtres Camera Club

Monday 20th February 2012

A battle took place in the Parish Rooms on Monday evening - fortunately of the non violent variety. Members of New Earswick Camera Club arrived armed with twenty digital images to pit against twenty that Forest of Galtres Camera Club thought would help them win the evening. Mike Barnard from Bridlington was the judge.  The total of forty images was mixed randomly. Those viewing, and the judge himself, did not know to which club an image on the screen belonged. Mike provided welcome comments about each image - often laced with his dry sense of humour - and awarded points to a maximum of twenty. Each member then hoped that the higher scored images represented their own club and the lower scores those of the opposition! Sheila Cornforth, Competition Secretary, would immediately announce after the delivery of the score, to which club that image belonged thus spirits were raised or deflated accordingly.

Four scores of twenty were awarded - honours even between the two clubs. Andrew Hague and Keith Schubert received twenty points to boost the Forest of Galtres score. The elongated shadow of a cyclist against textured ground lit by a golden glow was strikingly original and belonged to Andrew and Lavender with Tree belonged to Keith. The latter was a simple image but with great impact. Two thirds of the image was lavender sweeping the eye of the viewer up to a single tree on the horizon.

My Umbrella and Stag at Studley Royal were the two images to receive twenty for the opposition. A silhouetted figure holding an umbrella stood out against the background of a bonfire and a deep blue sky. Magnificently captured was the stag, its head held high in mid call.

Both teams did well to accumulate over three hundred points each but fortunately for the home team a final score of 346 meant defeat for New Earswick who scored 310 points. Undeterred, a return match was proposed by New Earswick and agreed for next season.

Next week, will be another opportunity for club members to share images and themes of their choice.
